Can online degree graduates apply for fully funded master's scholarships?
Usually, yes. Most major scholarships ask whether you hold a recognised bachelor's degree at the right level, not whether you studied online. But a few details catch online graduates out, and it pays to check them before you spend weeks on an application.
What scholarship committees actually check
Eligibility rules for the big government scholarships are written around your qualification, your experience, and your plans. For example, Chevening requires an undergraduate degree "that qualifies you for a UK master's programme," at least two years of work experience after that degree, and applications to three eligible UK university courses. Nothing in those rules is about how the degree was delivered.
In practice, committees and universities look at four things:
- Is the institution recognised? Your degree needs to come from a properly accredited institution. BYU-Pathway degrees and certificates are awarded by BYU-Idaho and Ensign College, not by an online-only provider.
- Is the degree the right level and length? Universities abroad compare your degree against their own system. This is where online graduates should pay closest attention (see below).
- Are your grades high enough? Many awards set a minimum. Commonwealth Master's Scholarships, for instance, ask for a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard.
- Do you meet the non-academic rules? Citizenship, work experience, a commitment to return home, and English requirements rule out more applicants than degree type ever does.
The detail online graduates should check first: degree length
BYU-Pathway's bachelor's degrees are 90 to 96 credits, built from three certificates plus general education and religion courses. A traditional US bachelor's is usually around 120 credits. Some universities abroad look closely at degree length when deciding whether you can enter a master's programme.
Before you apply: find the entry requirements for each master's programme on your list and check how they treat a US bachelor's degree of your length. If the page doesn't say, email the admissions office with your exact degree name, credit total, and awarding institution. A written answer now saves you from a rejection later.
How to translate your grades
US degrees use a GPA, while many scholarships use UK-style classifications like "2:1". Universities convert between them in different ways, so look for a country-specific entry requirements page on each university's website. If you need an independent comparison, UK ENIC issues a Statement of Comparability that compares an international qualification against the UK education system.
A step-by-step checklist
- Gather your documents early. Request official transcripts and your degree certificate from the awarding institution, and keep digital copies.
- Read each scholarship's eligibility page in full. Note citizenship rules, work experience minimums, and when your degree must be finished. Chevening, for example, requires you to have completed your undergraduate studies at least two years before its deadline.
- Confirm your degree is accepted by your target programmes. The scholarship usually depends on getting a university offer, so the university's entry rules matter as much as the scholarship's.
- Get a comparability statement if you're unsure. This is especially useful for UK programmes.
- Watch the deadlines. Several major awards close in October for study starting the following year. Check the scholarship finder for current dates.
How to present online study as a strength
Studying online while working or supporting a family shows discipline, time management, and initiative. Scholarship essays reward exactly those qualities, so make them concrete:
- Say how many hours a week you worked while studying, and what you balanced.
- Name the certificates you earned along the way and what you did with them.
- Describe leadership you took on, such as organising a study group or leading a weekly gathering.
- Connect your online learning experience to the change you want to make at home.
